Context and genesis of the film

After the success of the first " Bean " film in 1997, Rowan Atkinson, active in the role of Johnny English, decided to let the character rest for several years.

Despite its under-exposure, interest in Mr. Bean has not waned, thanks in particular to international reruns, the success of the animated series launched in 2002, and the arrival of social networks which allows new generations to discover the character.

In this context, a second film began to take shape: the idea was no longer to repeat the formula of the first feature film, but to offer a lighter, more visual and more "postcard" adventure, inspired by silent cinema and travel comedies.

This is how, in 2007, Mr. Bean's Holiday was born, conceived as a tribute to old-fashioned silent comedies.

Anecdotes

  • As with the first film, this one contains references to the series (he wants to earn money by dancing, he entertains a child by grimacing and sticking pieces of paper on his eyes and tongue, the restaurant and oyster scene recalls the episodes "Room 426" and "The Return", he takes photos (and videos) of anything and everything.

  • In the 80s, Rowan Atkinson performed the "air piano" sketch on stage.

  • The Cannes portion of the film was shot during the actual 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

  • The president of the Cannes Film Festival graciously agreed to allow the filming of a few scenes. The crew only had 45 minutes to film the red carpet arrivals!

  • The London church where the raffle is being held is located on Hartland Road in Camden Town, London. Source: mrbeansholiday.com/

  • Rowan Atkinson has very little dialogue. This was his wish. He felt that Mr. Bean talked too much in the first film.

  • The authors' idea was to see Mr. Bean in a country where he doesn't understand the language or the culture.

  • All of Rowan Atkinson's stunts were performed by himself.

The synopsis

Entering a raffle to raise money for the roof repairs of a small church in a London neighborhood, Mr. Bean wins the grand prize: a train journey to the French Riviera and a video camera. Thrilled at the prospect of a sunny holiday, he embarks on a simple trip… which, of course, takes a turn for the worse.

After crossing Paris and arriving at the Gare de Lyon, he inadvertently causes a separation between a father and his young son, Stepan. Bean then finds himself responsible for the boy, and their objective becomes finding the father before reaching Cannes.

The trip becomes a series of disasters: lost money and luggage, the unexpected appearance on a film set of the pretentious filmmaker, played by Willem Dafoe, and media reports of a child abduction. The encounter with Sabine, an actress accustomed to supporting roles, will change everything.

Between absurd situations, sunny landscapes of the south of France, and a beautiful complicity between Bean and young Stepan, the film offers an adventure full of humor and sweetness.
